t-storms; with thunderstorms; a t-storm or two...

Something I really hate to see on my clie Posted by Hello
(From the weather panel of Avantgo travel)

Seats at the library are hard to find

First, of course, you want one with a desk, because you want to study, not just read.

Next, you avoid those next to the library offices to avoid the noise.

Then you want one next to a power outlet so you can listen to music without using the battery; leaving you with about 30% of choices.

Sometime you want a spot with a strong WIFI signal for web access. However, this is not important.

Last, you want to avoid the noisily chating, hugging and kissing couples. But avoiding these couples leaves you only 10% of choices.

With the power outlet & kissing couple avoidance rules, I get about 10*30=3% of the seats to choice from~ and most of those are usually taken.

Mood: Oh, man, not again...

(Warning, do not read if you don't like crap talk)

Damn, I'm day dreaming again. Hormones overwhelming, can't concentrate on studying. In the mode which half of my mind is going irrational, or just going haywire. When that half takes over, stupid things I will do...

Quit it! I need a logical, rational mind right now. To hell with the hormones and neurotransmitters. Once again, I'm wishing that some kind of antagonist exists as a pill...

Great places to get wallpapers

Some of my friends like my wallpapers on my clie or my desktop, so here's where I usually get my wallpapers:

Japan Airlines has a great colection, renewed monthly usually comes with a calender.
  2. deviantart.com :
A great site to get art, photograph, GC, skins and much more.
  3. National Geographic:
I guess everyone knows this is a great destination if you're into photographs.
As for anime, some are great, but I don't like them to be my wallpaper, they usually make it look messy, expecially if you have a desktop full of shortcuts/icons. As a rule for a clean look, I stick with photos and keep the number of icons on my desktop under 5.

More clones? this time with PPCs

Pocket LOOX v70
Do these 2 look alike? These are the Fujitsu pocket Loox v70 and Asus Mypal A730W
Specs look the same, and the casing is defenently the same. My guess is that Asus made this as an OEM for Fujitsu, but also sold it under the Asus brand in Taiwan. I recall the 2 already did this kind of thing with some notebook before.

Looks good, was one of the only 2 PPC I'd be intrested to play with (the other is the iPaq with the touch pad) and is the only PPC I'd consider "nearly as good" as my clie. However, I still see no reason to switch to the darkside. Start menus just downright suck.

Yes, I stick with PalmOS unless palm screwed-up badly.

Ultimate skinning tool for PalmOS5~skinUI

skinUIlogo

In case you are a Palm user and haven't known about it, check out skinUI by dmitrygr at palmpowerups.com

It skins title bars buttons menus and much more. Although it's still in beta, it's nearly done, with some minor bugs left, and it already seem like the coolist new app of the palm comunity lately, being mentioned on most major palm related sites :)

And don't forget a skin I modified from the original Cobalt skin:

CobaltDark, with new command bar icons!

And of course, thank
dmitrygr for this great app.

Just got a new pair of headphones

My new sony Q36 Posted by Hello

Sadly, my old Q33 somehow got it's cord badly bent, and it won't play a note unless I kept it bent with a wire or tape or press it hard with my fingers. The wires sort of broke, I guess. It's such a waste. My old Q33 headphone was the first "clip-on" style headphone I know of, can change color by switching "shells" and has very very good sound quality. I've used it for about 2 years, I guess.

Oh well, here I am with my new Q36 I got today. It looks cool, matches the color of my black clie (PDA) and the cord is soft and comfortable, covered with cloth. Best of all, it has a built-in cord coiler, with the press of a button, the cord will be pulled in, out of sight.

However, I was disapointed with my first experience with it. Sony said that the cord roller is "quite". But, when I pressed that button, the cord rolled in with CLICKS so loud that it would only be "quite" if you're at some noisy place like Disneyland. The sponge is harder because it's still new. And, this thing is made in China, while my old Q33 is made in Japan. But most of all, sound is sort of dull and muffled; not as clear as my old Q33, now sound quality is what I really care about, and this preformence makes me think that this thing is a waste of money. However, they don't accept returns unless it's defective. Also, I've heard that all new headphones need some "molding in", and it takes time for it to do it's best sound quality.

Well, I guess I'll have to wait and see. Wish it'll get as good as my old one.

After reading the chapter of Cladistics in Systematics

A few thoughts...

The conflict: the words "Holophyly" and "Monophyly".
Originally, taxas of which all are from the same ancestor are "monophylitic groups", and out-groups are considerd another monophyly. Then came Henning with his Cladistics methods. In order to get his method to make sense, he took the word "monophyly" and applied a new defenition, meaning taxas that are composed of ALL the offspring of a common ancertor, including out-groups. Now with one word, two meanings, we have a confusion. Then along came Ashlock. In an attempt to clear things up, he tryed to replace Henning's "monophyly" with a new word, "holophyly". But, people started to use both words in cladistics; and we now have 2 overlaping words with 2 definitions, and a total of 3 combinations of word:definitions pairs.
Thanks a lot for messing stuff up, folks.

Notes: to find apomorphic charactors.
1.Out group comparison
If one of two homologous characters that occur as variants within a single holophyletic or monophyletie group is also found in the sister group, it is the plesiomorphic character.Any character that is restricted to the monophyletic group is apomorphic. A paraphyletic group is a monophyletic taxon which does not include all the derived ex-groups.

2. Ontogenetic sequence~ development.

3. Stratigraphic sequence~ fossil record.
---
Autapomorpeic characters evolved in only one of two sister groups.~ignored in cladistics.

How did Mayr wrote this chapter?
Introduced the Cladistics method with detail with 10 pages; told the advantages and usages of cladistics in half a page; then used up a total of 20 pages bashing the method and the supporters of cladistics altogether as if they are all useless unreasonable junk.
He even used emotional phrases such as "..., so be it."

Boy, he really hates the new kids in town...

On life: Real intrests?

While preparing for the nearing final exams, I started to feel bored and dosed off several times. Then I started to think, "What do I really like?" I choose to major in biology because I felt it intresting in high school. But now, I feel bored, so what am I really intrested in?

Now I come to think of it, I'm actually intrested in all sorts of things. I could walk in a library on a free day, and read all kinds of books, from technology to literiture, you name it. However, I hated to prepare for tests on those kinds of things. Literiture or computer science exams, or something else, whatever, I hate exams. However, when it comes to Biology, I just feel the exams boring, but I don't HATE them.

So now I have a more clear view of my self, I guess. It's the test preperation boring, not the topic boring. So, oh well, I should retreve my intrest of biology after the exams, I guess.

iPod sells falling...

Saw this on MobileRead.
Looks like the sells of iPods are falling.
I wouldn't say that "it's the end of iPod fads", but rather, I guess it's turning into a mature market, just as PDA. Most of the people who wants one have already got one, so growth is slowing down. That's all.

I wouldn't say that I like iPods since they feel so plastic...
But I should admit that at their recent price, iPods got the best value on the market.
Maybe I'd consider one if they come out with PowerBook styled aluminum iPods :)
In the mean time, the offerings on the market seems to tell me to stick with my beloved Sony Clie for MP3s.

Mood: To my self...

This semester is near it's end, so pull your self back together and kick some ass, man!!
(My progress: Mostly still un-studied, 2 and a half chapters left on cell-biology
Next target: Biochem)

What's that you were puting into your mouth?

A day or two ago, a Taipei city councilor told the press that several food venders were selling food that were recycled from funeral houses, previously used in some funeral ritual. He pointed out several venders (some reported a number of 6, others a number of 11), and since NTU is near a municipal funeral houses(about a mile from my dorm, I guess...), some amoung the list are near our campus, which we, our selves might had eatten some! (eew, sick...)

Overhyped
And so, I did a news search on google, and found some follow up reports. Apperently this councilor wasn't creditible. Of the listed names (the 6-numbered version, I really can't find the 11-numbered version although it was mentioned), as a reporter discovered, one has been closed for over a year, and others were non-existent. Fine with me, since I seldom trust politicians. So, this is an overhyped report, right? I think this is quite apperent. However, I never liked the food those venders near the back of our campus provided, either. Many of them are over priced and contain so much grease and MSG that they make you want to puke. Besides, it's a sticky and oily street with cockroches running about.

"So, just don't eat there..."
Well, I'd think there's much diference in the food in our campus, either. Nearly all the food options that a student could afford on a daily basis are servered over greased, over flavored, and lacks veggies. Sometimes I even prefer skipping meals or just drinking milk as a substitute.

Enter fastfood.
How about the bigger, highly known names?
I just read a book from the library, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal by Eric Schlosser
It tells you how these franchises are over charging you with low quality food. Let me point out a few. What you taste of almost every fastfood dish is of flavoring, not the food. For example, real french fries don't taste the way they do at the big M, instead, your tasting beef extract. They undercharge employees, and many of them are teenagers that don't care about your health. You may get a hamburger that has once been dropped on the floor. And the beef paddies. They come from big sloghter houses that care more about production speed then anything else, so your beef may contain shit from raptured guts that are carelessly removed. There are much more, just read the book and you'll know.

So what should we eat?
I don't know. I consider food that you cook a home yourself the only really safe food. However, that is not an option for us dorm dwellers, since cooking is prohibted for fear of fire hazards. So, I guess we are destinied to eat CRAP to get our education done. But is food at home really safer than the food outside? Think again. The "American Beef" you get at supermarkets are also from the same
sloghter houses that provide the hamburger beef paddies, and germs that normally only live in the guts (such as E coli. 0157) are frequently found, according to the book. And we all know that vegtables with high levels of pesticides are also heard of from time to time...

I guess all we can do is avoid the foods that we are sure were unhealthy(like greasy foods), and through the rest out of our minds since there's not much we could do to avoid it.

Mood:

Good luck on the exams!

My sister's taking her high school entrance exam today.
Good luck!

Mood: On my recent blog posts...

Just read someone else's blog, and it was so supprising. Never saw someone write out her dispare so boldly and powerful.

As for me, my blog has recently nearly turned into a geeky tech blog.

I guess it's because of me, trying to hide my sad feelings deep inside. Tried to forget about certain things by immersing my self in all those gadgets, spending more and more time on 1src, but deep down inside, I know that it only pulls your attention away temporally, and it comes back when ever I'm free and alone.

Someone told me that nobody likes to share someone else's sadness, so I locked up my ventilation. But, I guess, I'll need to let it out sometime, so I'm venting a little out here.

Just ignore my stupidity on "mood" headded posts if you don't like them.

Simmulating the Mac experience...

If you, like me, like Macs, but just haven't planed to buy a new computer yet, here's some stuff to make your Win box more like a Mac.
1.First, right click on your status bar click preferences and set it to be on the top of the screen.
2.Next, get Object Dock, and tweek to till you like it.(Hay, this thing's free)
3.Then, if your computer is fast enough, try konfabulator, if you like widgets.
4.If, you like the "expose" function of OS X, try winPOLSION, it's real cool.

As for skinning XP to look like OS X, my computer is too slow for that, so I'm not doing it, he he :)

So, palmOne is switching back to it's old name??

http://www.1src.com/headlines/show/001066.html
Ok, a while ago palm split it's hardware and software divisions into 2 companies.
And the hardware part tells everybody that they are now "palmOne".
When everybody has finnally got used to the name "palmOne", it now says that it is going to buy back the name "palm inc." and switch it's name back to "palm". Are they having an identity crisis, starting to think that the name of the "good old days" is better, or are they just trying to confuse it's customers?

Is palm turning into the "apple" of handhelds?

I remember seeing this intresting question some days ago somewhere(but forgot where, sorry :P )
It would be sad if palmOne's market dominance demolished to less then 10%, but let us put it this way. I would wish that palmOS would become clearly superrior to PPCs, just like OS X is so much loveable.(Although I know this would be impossible for the"clearly" part before a cobolt device is released)
But with hardware, at least the new LifeDrive truly looks like a good companion to the Power Mac G5s, expecially the holes on the back :D

Always good for more eye candy.
(If you add in cobolt, it's UI even looks a little like OS X's aqua UI)

Thoughts on the LifeDrive(edited)

LifeDrive mobile manager
(logo from palmOne)

It seems that LifeDrive reviews are multipling at an incredible speed. No wonder, it's one of the releases with the most major feature upgrade(4gig harddrive), and in my opinion, the best looking device they've ever made since the legendary Palm Vx.

Now, it has made a big splash on release. But does this mean big sells in the future? I'd say palmOne is having a PR crisis with all those reviews contradicting each other. Among them, the biggest problems are battery life and harddrive spin up speed.
(Here's the best review I've seen so far, on Gadgeteer)

With battery life, one review said"fantastic", and I've seen others critisize the battery life. Now we need a good overall test to see whether it's good or bad. Come on, palmOne, we need numbers!

And the harddrive spin up speed, there's an extreem debate on this fourm, and once again, one side says "very bad", the other says "acceptable".

Now we need some time for this mess to clear up, but palmOne, if you want this to be a hit, you should clear up this as fast as possible.

Personally, I was really wishing this new line of "mobile managers"would be a good replacement for clies and bulky laptops; and the army to fight back Microsoft.

edit: problems solved
Look here for the battery issue(incredibly long?!)
And this thread for speed issues
Seems that this is really the killer device^^

Nintendo finally came out with something "lookable"

Behold the Game Boy micro

from: ign.com

So this is the first Nintendo that you can consider "cool".
Game Boy fan no longer have to carry dull "plastic blocks".
Nice change, Nintendo. Intresting to see how would this effect the market this fall.
(Although, I personally am not that intrested in games, it's still good to see a well designed product :) )

palmOne finally made it right

LifeDrive mobile manager
(logo from palmOne)
The much anticipated LifeDrive Mobile Manager is finally officially released^^
And as in the rummers(yes, we have already know almost every single detal of it), this is an incredible device with a built-in 4gig hard drive, WIFI and bluetooth. And we have also known that you can use it as a plug in USB drive, and it can also do "folder sync" which syncs a certein folder on your desktop to the handheld.

What supprises me is the new photos if the LifeDrive. In the rummered photos, it looks dull. Also, I don't get any feeling with numbers, so I didn't realize the size. But now, as now photos are comming out, I realize that this thing is a beauty, and keeping in mind that it has a harddrive in it, it seems incredibly small.

a list of reviews

Next time, palmOne should do a "palmbook" with a clam shell form factor(just like the clie UX) with a bigger harddrive, that way, we can have "tiny notebooks" ^^

New computing life

Here's something many may have said before: "My PC sucks." Yeah, mine sucks, too. Although mine is already more stable then many of my friends, it still fails to boot once in a while.

So, I find my self using my clie more and more these days. Not only for making notes, music play back and the usual stuff you'd do with a PDA; but, web surfing, word processing, spread sheet editing, reading e-mail, news reading and blogging are all done on my clie(including this post, too) for the past weak. I find doing web surfing on this much better. Since it isn't as smooth, it will prevent me from wasting too much time on the web. And, to me, palm OS feels much better then windows. Most things are much faster due to lack of "junk code".

Yesterday, my PC showed a message saying "we are sorry but windows did not launch successfully", and I responded simply by switching the power supply off. I'd had enough of XP's lousy experiance. And I'm more sure my next one will be a mac if I had the money.

So, just passed a week with my clie as my primary computer, and it was quite pleasent.

The Lifedrive is no longer just a rumor!

palmOne home
palmOne Announces New Category of Mobile-Computing Products
'Mobile Manager' Line Joins Handhelds, Smartphones

So, palmOne it self is anouncing the Mobile Manager line to store a lot of your music, photos, movies and documents. Since it stores that much, and the first of the line is coming later this month(just as told in the lifedrive rumors), this indirectly varified the presence of the lifedrive. :)

Now, I can't wait to see the real thing.

However, I'd wait if they comeout with a 20gig+ model in the future.

The new sony walkman E series- crippled badly

It was so shinny, it looks like a fragrance bottle, it's so beautiful that you want to own it.
But it's a sony, arn't they notorius for not playing MP3s?
Sony has opened up and it supports MP3s, they tell you.
So it's great, ...
Wait, it's still crippled even if it supports MP3s!

Here's why:
I went to their Q&A site for those walkmans, and this is what I saw:

1.Can I use my own USB cord?
No.
(from what I know, a sony USB cord for PDAs costs about 30USD, what if this one costs the same?)

2.How do I charge?
Plug it in with the supplied USB cord.
(What if I'm on a trip without a computer?

*+?!...)

3.Can I see my music on it with the "exploror"in windows?
No

4.Can it record music?
Use sonicstage.

5.Can I delete songs on it?
No, use sonicstage.

6.Can I change songs titles on it?
No, use sonicstage.

7.Can I load songs on to it with the "exploror"in windows?
No, use sonicstage.

So everything is tided to sonicstage. In fact, that Q&A is unneed, since you can just replace it with one simple sentence: "Answers to all questions are No."

You wanna sell me a crippled sonicstage slave? Eat my shorts!

---

This is it, I'm staying with my Clie as my main MP3 player.

Are you skining Firefox or are you cloning Safari?

Have been looking for a new Firefox theme to match my mood and for a fresh look. But, as I browse along, I've noticed that about 1/4 of the themes I see are Safari mods, another 1/4 looks exactly like Safari. That makes half of the themes "Safari look-a-likes". Yeah, I know that there are many Apple fans out there (I, in fact, also installed a dock on my XP machine), and yes Apple is real good at eye candy. But that does not meen you've got to flood the web with Safari themes. You like the look of Safari? Fine, go get one of the "meny" choices out there(which all look the same), Download it and use it, thats all. Don't waste your time doing another duplicate to further waste web hosting space. We've had enough.

Dawn of the clones

Yes, I do major in Biology.
But no, I'm not talking about cloning animals or humans here.
Anyway, wanna see clones?
click on the following 2 links to see them:
for Taiwanes-> what we are familiar with | the clone
for others----> what we are familiar with | the clone

Hay, that's sick.
Yeah, we all know that the original is all so successful, and so easy to use.
But, hey you guys at big Y, you are the pionner of the web search engine, have you eatten your dignity to clone big G?
Although the big G formula is good, I like innovations better.

Two more mails to two more professors of the institute of immunology.
Wish there is at least a reply.

Motendus

The intresting and funny story of the CEO of Opera software

http://www.opera.com/swim/

The CEO of Opera, which makes the great Opera browser, said that he would swim from Norway to the USA if downloads of the browser exceed one million. And he sure went out to sea... read the link for the story.

Hm......Looks like you've got to find ways to add spice to life from time to time.

How to elongate your boot up time?

Do you think your computer boots up too fast?
If you are using win XP, try Konfabulator, in my experiance, it effectively doubles your computer's boot time :P

Not enough?
Try Norton system works, with a full install of all the components, it tripled the boot time of my old win98 computer(wonder if it's as good in XP...)

P.S. In my opinion, the additional components of Norton system works are junk, you only need anti virus. But, with Konfabulator, it's great eye candy, so I'll play with it for a while... :)

Ok, iPod are getting cheap :P

I once thought that iPods are expensive, as I said in a comment of a previous post.
But today, at Costco, I noticed that they are selling both the Toshiba Gigabeat 20GB and the iPod photo 30GB, with the iPod carrying a price tag that is about a buck or two cheaper than the Gigabeat.

Here's the prices:(well, I don't remember the actual numbers)
iPod photo 30GB: about 11200NT
Gigabeat 20GB: about 11800NT

Hay man, the iPod has 10 gigs more, for a lower price!
And compare that to the Sony Walkman HD3(Taiwanese version, supports chinese): about 15000NT (that gameboy looking thing hasn't shown up in stores yet)
and the Japanese version of HD3: 12000NT, while both only has 20gigs.

Guess the "expansive days" of the iPod are over. Maybe I should put the iPod back into my consideration list after all.

What an unpleasant experience

Guess I was all drowsy yesterday. When I left the "rich and poor" classroom yesterday I left my little bag of PDA stuff there. And it wasn't until I got home (5 hours later) that I realized that the bag wasn't with me. I've got 2 memory sticks and a clie WL110 WIFI card in there! One of the memory sticks was barrowed from a classmate, and the other one contained a whole backup of my clie PDA, which means that if someone read that one with a clie, they'd get a lot of my important info. To make things worse, that WIFI card was discontinued, and was one of the 2(all discontinued) my clie could take, which means that without it, my clie would be disconnected to the net forever!

I thought about what I would do if I didn't get them back...

I'd need to buy a new MS card for that classmate, and a new clie if I'd want to surf the net on the go again...

I couldn't sleep that night, and went to school, drowsier then ever, the next morning, in search of my stuff.

I was the first one to get it when the doors were opened. I got back into that blasted classroom, and looked around - I can't find that little bag! I went over 3 times before I gave up an started my way down stairs.

Then I tried my last chance and asked the guy in charge of classroom maintenance. And was he soooooo good! He had put it in a safe place, made sure I knew what it was, and gave it to me. He said a lot, reminding me not to do it again.

Of course, I won't want to experience that again.

AvantGo User Support is Great!!

Starting Apr 16(Apr 15 in the US),I got a problem with Avantgo, it's the 2nd server orinted problem I've encountered since I started using it(more then a year and a half ago)
I can't get the Avantgo homepage loaded. All I get is a page with this message:
"An error occured
We're sorry, but an error occured while processing your request."

So, the next day(Apr 17), I filled out their support form, and got an automatically generated email assuring that they would reply in 3 days.

And sure enough, I got their reply today(Apr 19), and it was fixed!
(execpt for the ads, oh well, that's a bigger problem for them)
A good company with good support deserves our support, so, here's a little publicity for them; and I'll continue using their great service.

Finally found THE MP3 player, and it's not a sony

All right, just found this, from Toshiba:
The Gigabeat F series (cnet taiwan review | engadget report )

touch pad, good looks, USB on the go, big color screen and a reasonable price.
almost did well everything sony did wrong with their walkman HD
The only draw back is the battery life of 16hr compared with sony's 20+
(the 30hr they claimed is just for ATRAC3, not MP3), but hay, I can live with that.
just compare that with this:
which one looks better? I don't think there is anything to argue here.
I, would not want to hold that gameboy looking thingy on the streets.
I was once a Sony fan, but after they droped the clie and then lost the edge with walkmans, I'm turning.
Besides, walkmans don't support Chinese traditional ID3 tags, no color screen nor USB-otg, AND BOTH SONY &TOSHIBA HAVE THE SAME PRICE.
So, I'd go for the "more for the buck", with the same high quality you'd expect from most major Japanese companies.

I'm saying bye bye Sony unless you come up with something just as good.

On the movie playing functions of the PSP

I'v recently seen many websites saying how revolutionary the PSP is as a portable movie player.
Yeah, it plays movies, but not very good.
First, it uses UMDs or Memory stick duos.
With the UMDs, it's like you've got to buy another "lower resolution version" of every DVD you have. And they haven't even started selling them yet.
And with the Memory stick duos, it's very expensive (from what I know, it could sell for twice of that of CF or SD cards). And besides, it maxs out at 1GB.(Yeah, they just came out with a 2gig version in japan, but the price is like intended to stop anybody from buying it)

So, I guess most people would use MSs instead of UMDs for movie viewing.
But this isn't practical.

Viewing movies with the PSP is similer to viewing with a clie(a sony PDA). In fact, it uses Image converter 2(which is a modified version of what came with clies), to compress the files on your computer to a MS card. And notice the difference: Image converter for clies are free, but Image converter for PSP is "sold seperately".

First of all is the problem: where do you get your movie files?
The easiest way is to convert from VCDs, but those are hard to get these days.
DVDs are protected by encrption, so you need to crack the code first(and breaking the law), rip it to MPEG format(which is extreamly slow), then feed it to Image converter. I've seen someone on a fourm that said it took him a whole night to rip a DVD, and maybe an hour more to put it into the memorystick. That's crazy, if you have time for riping, why don't you just see it on your desktop, with a larger screen?
Or, get them with BT or P2P and look out for subponas from Hollywood. Something I wouldn't do.

Then, after you have it on the memory stick, do you really need to see it on the go? Only if you commute long distances on public tranportation, I guess. Steve Job got it right: "You can listen to music while doing other things, but you can't while watching a movie." Yeah, imagine watching a movie on your PSP while driving on the highway to work.

My Clie can play movies just the way PSPs does, but I seldom do it, even if my Clie's screen has much more pixels then the PSP. I don't have much videos to watch, and I can't watch videos while studing for an exam.

Just got my bike fixed

Turning off my phone

Although mobile phones are all the rage
I'm starting to get tired of the bombardment of ringtones, vibrants and calls.
I decided toturn off my phone and return to the peacefull life I once had. It really doesn't matter to loose call since none of them were truely important, and besides, I'm a loner.

Disconnecting from the world.

What the heck am I doing here?

The fight for your pocket

So many things are fighting for your pocket space, how do you choose?
Let me list the stuff:
1.Phone, 2.MP3/walkman, 3.games, 4.digicam and 5.PDAs.

Now, I think the first thing is to consider which is most important to you.
As #1 can do the work of at least 3 and 4; #3 may do #2; my PDA can substitute 2, 3 and 4
A Treo can even do all of them.
But convergent gadgets never do all of them well.

Phones only take calls good, they do a lot more, but do non of them well.
For example, many mini memory card maxs out at 128MB, so, takes too less MP3s; most can only play simple games; 0.31MP camera; and inputing data with "multitap"(worse then a PDA's touch screen)

Walkmans usually just play music, and do it well.

Portable games(aka PSP)are only good at games, too big and heavy for music play(and bad UI)

Digicams also just take photos.(Only a friction plays music)

PDAs may also be good at games or music play, but never good at taking pictures. I'd say it's best for reading web content on the go.

So focus on what you need most and keep in mind that the added on functions seldom do well.

Thus, for me, I have a seperate PDA and a phone that is only for phone calls(There is an email function, but it's taken care of by my PDA). Personal data management and news reading is essential to me, PDAs are OK with music play, and I'm not that found of phone calls.
Maybe it's because I seldom get or make calls, don't have much close friends, and no girl friend. Call me a loner.

But for some others, I guess the simplist solution is to keep the pockets clean and empty :D

Learning to be ignored

I guess, because everybody's life is so busy, they have a tendency of ignoring others.
Because you aren't any "important somebody", they don't have to always notice you.
Thus, you've got to get used to being ignored.
No, nobody takes a friend that serious, so you might as well think you're just an acountance.
Get used to being ignored, and live with it.
The world still keep on moving even without you.

Thus you learn that you, also, have a right to ignore others.

I'm going to turn off my phone for a little privacy...

News: New Sony HD walkman anounced

The new sony NW-HD5 walkman is just released.
Quite nice, but
1.Hay that's ugly, looks more like an uglified gameboy
2.only displays 6 language, without Chinese(hay, iRiver had something like 20+)
3.only 20GB
4.no cradle nor remote control(which makes the HD1 still better)
5.Man, it lakes the "Sony cool look"

The HD1 made me look forword to a HD2;
The HD2 made me look forword to a HD3;
The HD3 made me look forword to a HD4;
Now the HD5 made me look forword to a HD6...
Nice try Sony, go on, and let Apple and iRiver eat it out.

All right, done another web site(I hate IE)

Finally done the Wuling site for the cycling club.
With each debug, the more I resent IE and the more I appreceate the hard work of the guys at mozilla and W3C.
It seams that M$IE always have some kind of rendering problem with this or that. But with Firefox, you usually get what you want to see.

But the thing that really pissed me off is not the rendering problems of IE, but rather the "safety measures" that came with XP SP2. It went so far as to block my flash movie and my 2 javascripts.
The Flash movie is the navigation bar that links to the pages of the site; one javascript is for showing the last modifing date of the site, and the other just a count down clock to a certein date. IE said that they are "active content", and that they may be harmful code. Come on, man, this is just like saying that "THE CLOCK ON YOUR DESK MAY KILL YOU!" Yeah right, can you strike someone to death with an alarm clock?

This forced me to go on to MSDN for some help, and found some hysterical solution:
Just add the following tag to your page

with"http://yoursite.com/"being the URL of your site
Yeah, I guess M$ like to play with "digital signatures", but this is absolutely stupid.
There's a Chinese saying that goes something like "taking of your pants just to let out the gas of the guts".

Ok, so next time remember to add that junk code to your page if you use flash or java, or IE will block them: for no reason.
And, once again, use a W3C compliant browser, such as Firefox. Website developers around the world will thank you.
Get Firefox!
---

I also played around with HTML validation, and found that the number of errors of a M$ Word generated HTML file could be 10times the normal errors of HTMLs you write yourself. Macromedia Dreamweaver is a very good piece of softwere, thank them for their generous 1 month trial(such a shame that I can afford to but it); and thank them for including a "Word/Frontpage junk code cleaner".

Thoughts of today

Before you want people to work for you, you should respect them first.
Not let them wait a whole afternoon, having nothing to do, practically wasting their time.

Today, I was not respected. So I left. Wasting 5 hours for nothing is enough.

News: Gmail is now 1 year old

Last year's April fool's, Google launched Gmail beta with 1GB storage, and we now know clearly they weren't joking.
Today, it's once again April fool's, and Gmail just turned one.
On Gmail's one-year birthday, they celebrated by putting this "Infinity+1 storage plan", and you started to wonder:"Infinity Gigabites?"
To archive their funny April fool's special homepage, here is a copy: (all rights belong to Google)-------------------------------------------

A Google approach to math.

On the eve of Gmail's one-year birthday, our engineers were toiling away furiously. Notes scribbled all over the walls. Complex calculations on napkins and empty pizza boxes. Millions of M&Ms.

The result?... starting today, we're beginning the roll-out of our new and top secret Infinity+1 storage plan. The key features are:

  • Write, don't worry.
You want to stop caring about storage. We want to keep giving you more. Today, and beyond.

  • The gift that keeps on giving.
1394.860506 megabytes of storage (and counting) for every user.
(the number in front should be running on their own site...)

  • No complicated equations. No tough algorithms.
    Just this one graph:

Gmail turns 1 today. And we've always loved a good joke. We know we won't reach infinity, but check out what we will do ...

Well, in fact they said they ARE giving out TWO GIGs, that's right, one more gig.
Are they going to give out one more gig every year?(lol)
(Although my account says: "You are currently using 26 MB (2%) of your 1398 MB.", I guess they well gradually add it up)
I don't know, but one thing clear:"They are always number 1 in free storage"
(Just as Yahoo anounces "plans" for giving out 1GB)
By the way, anyone needs a Gmail invitation? I've got more then enough to spear^^

Haunted

Was overwhelmed by emotions,
So tried overwhelming myself with duties,
Alas,
I realized that the later adds on, rather then replaces the previous.
Thus,
I found myself washed on helplessly by the undefeatable drift of life.

Was overwhelmed by memories,
So tried depriving myself of the bad rememberings,
Alas,
I realized that I can't delete them clean, as all that passes leaves a trace,
Thus,
I found myself haunted constantly by the unpleasent artifacts of the past.

News: Life expectancy of Americans to drop?

According to a report on nature.com, the life expectancy of Americans is due to drop, because of obesity. It's the first time that life expectancy in the US is predicted to drop, so this is going to make history.
That's intresting.
Although it's about americans, but I don't think that only Americans should face the problem, other countrys around the world is adapting a greesy food life style, so these countrys might face this problem some time in the future. Beware.

So guys, watch your weight.

News: Sony finally got the flash MP3s right

NW-E507(photo from sony's site)
Sony is about to come out with a new line of flash based MP3 Walkmans. (the E505 comes with 512MB; E507 with 1GB)They have an incredible playtime of 50hr, supports not only sony's ATRAC3 but also MP3 files and doubles as a FM radio. And it also has a beautiful OLED screen that shows 3 lines of text; now that's what the ipod shuffle lacks.
Not only is it packed with functions you'd expect from a modern MP3 player(except that it doesn't record stuff), it looks good. (IMHO, much better then that white stick) Now, just give it a competitive price, and it will force Apple designers back to the drawing board. Actually, I think the ipod shuffle is the worst looking product that Apple ever came up with. (lack of function and just a plain white plastic stick) Come on, let's have better products to go with your good brand.

site on sony japan (of E507) | review of E505 on cnet

Today @ BK

There was this guy standing in the food prep. area, with his arms crossed in front of him, doing nothing except staring at the employees. I guess he must be a superviser or something close. And boy did you see his face, he had this expression that looks as if someone just slaped his face and took his wallet! Surely not a pleasent look. I guess it mustn't feel too good working in front of him(^○^).
But hay, didn't he notice that a customer is looking at him? They should of taught him not to give the "look" to customers...

News: What? you're taking pictures with that MD walkman??

No kidding, you could actually take pictures with a MD walkman.
Sony just released the new MZ-DH10P MD walkman. It has a tiny color screen, a 1.3Mega pixel digicam, and plays the new 1GB Hi-MD. I'd say it's a great gadget, only if it wasn't an MD.
Yeah, it can take pictures, it's got great design, it's got a color screen, ... But, why would you want an MD walkman when you can carry much more music on a HDD based MP3 player? MD's are like so phased out that a BestBuy store I went to was clearing them out a year ago.

Com'on, Sony , wake up to the reality. We want HDD, not MD!

Nearly killed my Clie!

I was just playing with some dangerous software on my clie, then found some system files corrupt. So I tried to delete the files I just installed. But the OS thought it was a system file, not letting me delete it, forcing me to do a hard reset. So I pushed on the power switch and pressed the reset button...but all I got is a normal reset. This is when I realized that my power switch died! Damn!
I tried to manually delete the bad files, but still to no avill.
Now I had only 3 more options left:
1.drain the battery to flush all data in the RAM(which might take hours or even a whole day)
2.send it to get the power switch repaired, which I'm sure would result in the Clie being away for a whole month.
3.unplug the battery, again to flush all data in the RAM.(which, is risky as I don't know if the battery would go wrong)
For time's sake, I took the 3rd solution, which might be the fastest.
.............................................
So I took off the battery cap and unpluged the battery power cord.
I waited for a few secends then pluged it back in, and...
All I got is a white screen and the power indicator LED flashing on and off...
Now I'm busted.
I repluged it, or repluged it to the AC adapter, but still, the same thing happened again and again.
Durring this, the reset button only temporily stopped the LED flashing.
-Panic--Panic--Panic--Panic--Panic-
I gave up and considered sending it in for a repair, then realized that that means that I'd have to go back to a paper based dayplaner, and copy over everything from my computer to my paper dayplaner...at least 3 hours going down the drain.
After considering that terrible thought, I pluged in the battery once again, minutes after my last try, and...

IT WORKED!!!

I was sooooo happy to see the friendly "Palm powered" logo back again. And it was so good that MS backup worked smoothly as usual. Now my clie is alive again, only that the power switch is dead(not broken but simply not responding). Good thing that the 4 main buttons still turns on the clie.

Firefox: security update(ver.1.01)

a new security update, firefox 1.01 is out.
it is said on mozilla.org that "The security update for Firefox includes several fixes to guard against spoofing and arbitrary code execution."
I guess you won't feel much difference, but it's a fixed version so it's safer, right?
go over to mozilla.org to update if you'd like to :)

Alright, clies are dead.

This is a really sad day.

It is said that Sony would stop production of clies in Japan after July.
I guess all we could do is save up and buy a new one before that as a backup PDA.

Although in most markets, new and better thing well eventually phase out the old products, but after a year and a half with my clie, I didn't see any non-clie released afterwards that is better then my clie. PalmOne never did any model right after the Palm Vx; and microsoft stuff is always too complex, buggy. and never user friendly.

Wish my clie can live on for years to come...

Rumer: New clie comming out?(also: new Appshelf update)

It is said that Sony might come out with a new clie (in japan, of course) in the new future.
They said that it would be a successor of the TH55, and it would look more like a vaio then a clie.
Some say it would have never to be seen innovations(some say new features, some say new form factor).

...Lets hope that one of those innovations is the use of Palm cobolt(OS6)(this is not in the rumer, though)

Also, Appshelf is recently updated to Ver.1.2Beta3
Major improvements that I notced include:(please check the website for a full list)
1. support for the new landscape app for clies, loads seperate wallpapers for landscape and portrait mode.
2. embedded simple file browser.
3. the extension can now be placed on all 4 sides of the screen.

Palm OS not attractive any more to some developers?

Some how, that's what I feel. Here's why:
1.New software for palm don't appear as frequently as before. I'm seeing less new software now.(or is it just me?)
2.Skype made a PPC version, but said there are no plans for a Palm version.
3.Mozilla is looking for Win CE developers for it's new mobile browser project(minimo). But why aren't they looking for Palm developers? (I would like to see Mozilla on my Clie)
4.There are lots of CF and SDIO accessaries on the market, (like CF modems, WIFI cards, GPS recevers...etc), but with few exception, they only come with drivers for PPC, but none for Palm.
5.Almost all the new comers of the handheld market use PPC, we seldom see new Palm licencees.(I've seen some where that there are about 50+ companys making PPC; while the number of Palm licencees are scarce, and many of them haven't came out with new handhelds for a long time.)

I don't know what's the problem, but PPC is getting all the news now a days, and I don't see Palmsource doing anything about it. All I see is cobalt(OS6) siting there for a year with no one intrested yet. Come on, man, DO SOMETHING. I don't want to see Microsoft eating up everything. We already had enough of that bad UI(like digging very deep in to your start menu to do one simple task) and numerous security problems of Windows on PCs. I don't want those problems show up on every phone or PDA on the market. There is still symbian on phones to fight MS, but Palm is the only one who can stop MS from eating up PDAs.(Linux is not optimized enough for handhelds yet, I've seen them, thank you.) So why are you still sitting there waiting for MS to kill you, Palmsource?

ride time 2:56(+nearly 1hr of rest time)
average speed 19.2km/hr
max speed 55km/hr
distance 56.05km

A change of walkman recording media

Since Sony came out with the first cassette tape walkman, portable music players were always a hot product. But the recording media kept changing. First was tapes, then came CDs, MDs(which never caught on execpt in japan), then MP3 players with flash memory or hard discs, and all sort of other forgoten ones that never were popular.

Last year, the iPod was that star of the market in the US, causing prices of CD and MD models to drop to a level where there tape playing counter parts once had been. In Taiwan, although the iPod was also hot, but "USB thumb drive MP3 players" were more popular because they sell at a price near (or even cheaper) CD players. These tiny players quickly replaced CD walkman into the main show cases.

I always thought it weird that MDs were main stream in Japan. In Taiwan they were simply "highly over priced", so people stuck to CDs, then jumped on to flash based MP3s, by passing the cool but expensive MDs. But I guess the price of MDs were considered acceptable in Japan, and it was so hot that you can even buy albums in MDs instead of CDs. But, intrestingly, even as Sony came out with NetMDs and HiMDs, people are starting to flock to flash and/or HDD based MP3s, with MD sells droping dramatically. (see a Japanese report) I guess everybody likes newer stuff, not just newer modifications.

I, my self, had ditched my tapes , put away my CD player, is using memory cards(flash based) and my Clie PDA as a MP3 player, and considering getting a HDD based player. Maybe a Sony Walkman HD3.

So, guess MP3s are really going to take over. Face the reality and stop being in the way, record companies!

News:
